THE DEPARTURE

I flew out of Boise airport at 12:58 pm on Saturday, September 1st. After a two hour layover in Salt lake City, I landed at JFK Internatonal, New York City, at 11:01 pm. I was very fortunate to have a good friend, Kris Nielsen, who lives 45 minutes outside of downtown Manhattan, come pick me up at the airport. I stayed at his house and just returned from an amazing visit to Ground Zero. Kris and his family will be taking me to Sandy Hook, New Jersey tomorrow for the commencement of this long awaited for journey.

Chip, I don't know if you'll be able to check your blog and people's comments along the way. I hope you can - and can also keep everyone updated on your progress. I was glad to see this about your start. Good Luck!

Hi Chip, and Hi Aunt Annie! Yes, Chip checks his e-mail and his blog for comments just about every day. This is a good way to ask him questions that don't require long answers, as he is very limited with time. He can answer as best as he can on his blog, or I can try too, since we talk daily. In the second picture, he is holding "flat Hannah" if you are familiar with that. It is a school project - you send "yourself" to different places, they take pictures, and then they send "you" back. Chip is participating in it for Hannah's class. Anyway, Chip had a rough first day yesterday with a flat tire and getting lost, but he is staying very positive and not looking back. He is motivated again today and feels great, even after riding 13 hours yesterday. Tonight he will be in Stroudsberg, Pennsylvania. Chip, you are my inspiration, I love you!

Hi Tracy, I thought that might be "Flat Hannah" and I was right. I meant to mention it in my first comment and forgot. What a good daddy he is to do this major ride and include his little girl's school project. Sorry his first day had some hitches, but he is a positve person and will do fine. I'll continue to "follow along" with him on his trip. Love to all.

Hi Chipster.....it was good to hear the wind when you were riding today....it meant you were not detered by a rough start. I am working on your trademark. I hope to get it in the mail soon. Brian and the kids say "hi". Payton says she misses you already. Hang in there!!! You can do it!!!

Look forward to reading of your progress often. We have our map marked. Cannot believe the dedication and effort that this will take, but know that you will do it because you have decided that you will! Proud of you and love you! Watch out for nails and cheap maps!
Love ya,
Mom Kossub
P.S. Send flat Hannah this way. We'll take a pic of her in front of California Adventure (or Disneyland - whatever!)

Hi Chip, I love that you took flat Hannah with you! Just wanted to share something Hannah said in Primary last Sunday. We were talking about service and ways we can serve others. I asked, "What are some ways we can serve others?" Hannah commented with a big smile across her face, "You could ride your bike across the country for OMEH, like my dad!" When I talk to any of your kids you can see the pride they have for you. What an inspiration!!! We love following you on your ride through your blog. Good Luck, our thoughts and prayers are with you! Love, Tol Nikki & boys
