DAY 18 - DESTINATION - QUINCY, IL

Miles: 109 - Total Miles: 1,173 - Total Ascent: 33,882 ft.
Today was my first century ride...ever! Probably my best riding day so far. The morning was especially great - no head winds, and flat. I was averaging 16 to 18 miles an hour for the first three to four hours. Luckily, my head was clear and time seemed to pass smoothly...for the first eight hours. The last hour always seems to drag.
.
Good news! My right knee did not feel a lot better - it felt 100% better - all day long! Considering this was my longest day yet, this is the day I was most apprehensive about. But thanks to your prayers, for now my knee feels great. Thank you all!
.
I can only imagine that Missouri is going to be full of dogs because (more good news) today, not one dog!
.
Upon arriving in Quincy, my bike was in serious need of a tune-up. So I had to ride (after already completing more than 100 miles) from 54th street to 8th street, and then 11 blocks south on 8th street, to find a bike shop! They did a tune-up, adjusted my gears, put on a new chain, and sold me a bottle of chain lube. Now it rides like new again.
.
Today's high was definitely getting to see the Mississippi River - WOW! On the other side lies Missouri, but we'll save that for tomorrow.
.
"I CAN!"

Wow! you got to the Mississippi River for the first time. It's very huge and pretty, it brings me back memories when I first saw it in ILL when visiting my two friends in Iowa.

Can't wait to see you and your family in California in October.

your friend,
Julene Cook

Chip, Glad your knee feels better. Remember it cold always be worse. If you lived in Russia, you would be somewhere in Siberia now with 4,500(guesstimate) miles to go. Just a little reality check...like you need a reality check. :) You CAN!

We're so pleased you had a great day! Congratulations on your first 100+ mile day on a bike. Fantastic news about your knee and NO dogs!

Keep on keeping on......YOU CAN!

Chip:

You are doing great. Making it to the Mississippi is a major milestone. I'm glad to hear your knee is feeling better.

I am leaving Las Vegas on the evening of 9/28. I should make it to Flagstaff that night. I am planning to meet you in Dodge City on the 30th. I am bringing a few things from Carrie. If you need anything; try to let me know this weekend.

Maybe I can give you a rest for a day; I’ll ride the bike and you can ride on the trailer (ha ha). Oh what a visual.

See you soon,

Dad

Hi there my friend,

I wish that you could feel what is in everyones hearts as they read about your adventures. If everyone who reads this would just say "hello" (whether they know you or not) I know that you would have hundreds if not thousands of "hellos". Your selfless act of charity is touching many...some of whom you may never know.

You Can!! Lisa

P.S. Payton said this, "Tell Chip Schultz I miss him and I love him...and would he let me ride in his bike trailer?"

Chip ~ I know you get SO many comments to all of your daily postings and it's probably not always easy to respond, however, if you get a chance (no rush) perhaps you can answer a question that I've been asked a few times now. People have asked what your affiliation is with Freedom Alliance. I don't know so please tell me what I should tell them. Right now I'm telling people that you will be donating the $ you raise to their organization for educational scholarships. Right?

Noah's class (4th grade) is learning alot about geography right now. Every week there's a different geography related project that involves getting out the map and finding various info. I figured your trip involves plenty of geopgraphy so we decided to somehow tie into that. This week Noah passed out your business cards to every single kid in his class, as well as his teacher and a few other people at his school. I educated him a bit in advance on what you are doing so he could explain it to his class. We practiced it a few times at home first. He stood up in front of his entire class (30+ kids) and told everybody about what his uncle Chip is doing. I'm kinda hoping these kids think it's so cool that they take the cards home to thir parents and spread the word. So I've got my creative thinking cap on for ya out here in Cali.

Wow Chip, closer to home every day!! I had to let you know that your and your cause were brought up last night at the PTO meeting. I think because of you, the school is now developing a "Patriotic Committee". The Principal announced it last night in conjunction with you as " The most patriotic guy I have ever met!" So kudos to you. Even though you are not here, you are still making changes for the positive here. You'll be in Kansas soon, Reichle territory. Be sure to call Pa Reichle and he'll hook up you in the SunFlower state!!

I sent your card to a few of my former A.P.'s. Jason said, "That Chip is always making a difference in the world." Most of us are passionate about certain things, but you take it one step further, and do something more than talk about your passion. You inspire the rest of us to do a little more than we might normally have done too.
Lots of love,
Faye

Hi Chip,
Wow over 100 miles today!! You are the man! Are you bored with your music yet? You probably have every song memorized by now, even a little Nickel Creek.:)Hope it has helped get you through some of the rough spots on your journey. Loved the pictures of the Mississippi River, gorgeous!
The boys are all standing around me and the computer saying,"Hi Chip". Parker looks at his brothers and says, "My Chip!" Taylor asks, "Are you doing O.K.? Are you having a fun time? Go Chip, Go Chip, Go Chip!! You can do it!"
We love you!!
