DAY 17 - DESTINATION - SPRINGFIELD, IL

Miles: 92.8 - Total Miles: 1,064 - Total Ascent: 32,160 ft.
1,000 MILES!!! Today was a big day. Very happy about the big "mile stone." I called my good friend, Bernie Perkins, at 999.9 miles and celebrated the big 1,000 with him. Very cool!
.
Today was a lot like yesterday. Long and flat - windy and corn, corn, corn. No dogs again - except for a tiny little yapper that nearly got clobbered by a car trying to get to me!
.
Stopped for lunch at Monical's Pizza in a favorite town of Elliott Jones - Clinton, Illinois. I was really pleased that Robin, who worked there, allowed me to eat at the buffet free of charge. How nice was she! (I only had one slice of pizza and some cottage cheese - but still very nice!) Thanks Robin!
.
It was a forty-five mile stretch from Clinton to Springfield and not one gas station, convenience store, or place to refill my water bottles. Out of desperation, and just a few miles outside of Springfield, I stopped at a random business hoping they would have a drinking fountain. Thank goodness they had bottled water - COLD bottled water and allowed me to fill both my water bottles - Whew!
.
I was told by my uncle that a great deterrent for farm dogs is an "air horn." So, at the first sight of a Walmart I went in and bought two... bring it on!!
.
Being that Springfeild, the capitol of Illinois, and a very historical town, is the birth home of President Abraham Lincoln, I found it very appropriate to take a small detour and visit his tomb. In the photo above, you'll see that I took "Flat Hannah" along with me.
.
So far, most of Illinois has been completely bland - similar to the photos below. Until next time.... "I CAN!"

Hi Chip!

Have fun and be careful acrossing the Mississippi River Bridge in Quincy, ILL. Don't forget to take a picture of the Mississippi River It's HUGE! When visitng my friend John (ex-Californian guy) and his wife in Iowa, we went to Nauvoo, ILL on a road trip to see the temple and we went across on the Mississippi River Bridge it was fun.

Bernie - you know that if I wasn't at the kid's school, he would have called me at 1,000 miles, right? Ha ha! Just kidding - I knew he wanted to share that with his "wing man"! Chip - I couldn't be prouder - I can't go anywhere without people asking about you and offering support. I love it!

Love you Schultzy!

Hey Chip, hope the sights get a little more interesting to pass the long hours on the road. Keep that knee in good shape so you dont' need a replacement by the time you get home. You are giving us quite a geography lesson-- thank you! It seems as though you exist on mostly a diet of pizza. Good thing for the Itallian invasion in the USA!!! Anyway, good luck tomorrow. We will be thinking of you and your poor sore knee. The Lindquists

Chip,

Who ever thought Dr. O could do this. Reaching the 1,000 mark is an awesome accomplishment. We are so proud of what you are doing and the difference you are making. I get a ton of questions here at work about your trip and the cause you are riding for because of having your blog up on my computer. I had a client in that runs a fairly large foundation and he thought what you were doing was so outstanding and actually meant more than all of the money they give out annually because you are giving of yourself.

Just so you know my firm is taking care of all of the paperwork Lisa talked to you about so don't sweat any of that. YOU CAN!!!

This link is to email Sean Hannity, I've been sending him a message every day for a while now, in hopes he might do some kind of interview with Chip. Maybe if all of us following Chip could send Hannity a note every day we can get him a interview. I really think this could boost the coverage of this great thing Chip is doing.

YOU CAN

Thanks for what you are doing Chip!!

Hippy Doug

HA HA!! That is seriously funny, Chip!!! Hey, are you sure that wasn't Monica's pizza? So what's with these town names? Next thing we know you'll be pulling over for sushi in Obama, MO or Edwards, NM! Okay, serious now - Glad to hear that your knee is holding up and that there haven't been too many more dog days. All the best. Godspeed!

I was wondering when Flat Hannah would be making another appearance. Not only are you raising money for a great cause, riding your bike across the country, dealing with an injured knee, fighting off dogs (hope the horns work) but you are also participating in your seven-year-old's school project. You are a good guy Chip Schultz!

When people hear for the first time what Chip is doing, their initial response is typically "You're crazy!"
What people really mean when to say is... “Wow... you have more courage, drive, and passion than most people I have ever met”.

Chip, one of the things I admire most about you is your gift for taking ordinary life experiences and turning them into something extraordinary!, Always leaving a lasting impression on those who share the moment with you. Whether its a usual dinner on a schoolnight with your family, a hike with a group of close friends, sipping a soda or a eating a peach on the side of the road, capturing a moment with a camera, a Memorial Program, or a in this case a Bike Ride, they all become extraordinary experiences because of you....and are all things that cannot be purchased with any amount of money.

I would be honored enough to say that I have met you, and had the pleasure of simply shaking your hand... But God has granted me the much greater privilege of being your lifelong friend and to share some of the most meaningful experiences of my life in your company. (22 years and counting)

My thanks to all who have served and continue to serve our Great Nation – The United States of America!, especially to those who have sacrificed ALL giving their last breath and life blood on the battlefield so that we can enjoy the Freedom which we so often take for granted. “Greater Love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

And my sincere Thanks to You, Tracy, and your wonderful children for supporting this worthy cause...your are an amazing example to all of us.

Bernie
