DAY 48 - DESTINATION - HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA

Miles: 45.8 - Total Miles: 3,147 - Total Ascent: 93,705 ft.
I did it! One week ago from today I dipped my front tire in the Pacific Ocean. The experience was about as overwhelming as one could imagine. The physical aspect of completing a coast-to-coast bike ride; the accomplishment of nearly a lifelong dream; the reunion with my wife and children; the first return trip in 3 years to our hometown; and the ominous conclusion to the final chapter of this remarkable journey, had finally arrived.
.
.
My route through Anaheim crossed the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Rio Vista. On the northeast corner sits a Del Taco restaurant that I can still recall being a Naugles Tacos. Since the age of 10, I lived less than a mile away from what has become my home away from home (I once ate at this very Del Taco 4 times in one day). Needless to say, I took the time to go inside and have a Coke and a quesadilla. Ironically though, my friends Jacob and Dennis Irving weren't able to make it to the beach, but decided to meet me at Del Taco. John Hermanson (along with his wife, children, and his two brothers) were en route up from Indio and also decided to stop at this Del Taco. Then my in-laws happened to be at the adjacent 7-11 and noticed a bike with an American flag, so they decided to join us as well. In total, there were 15 of us visiting at my old hangout - what a great visit.
.
A few miles down the road, I came across what I thought was an unruly supporter chanting, "U.S.A. - U.S.A. - U.S.A. ..." It was my old friend Tad Lindquist and his family stopping by to offer their support. In another vehicle were Tad's in-laws, also out to support. And to top it off , in a different vehicle, was another good buddy, Dave Jensen and his three sons. This 3 vehicle motorcade made for quite the entourage down the 14 mile stretch of Beach Boulevard (with no shoulder to ride on). Perfect timing - thank you all!
.
It was when I reached Pacific Coast Highway that things seemed to go numb. Once I arrived at Huntington Beach I called Tracy to tell her that I'd be seeing her in a matter of moments. I also called two great supporters (and two very dear friends of ours) back in Boise to tell them that I had arrived safely. Only a couple of hundred yards to go!
.
.
.
While riding on the boardwalk, if I couldn't see the finish line, I could sure hear it! Nearly one hundred family members, close friends, distant friends, and complete strangers were gathered together. Yelling, clapping, cheering, and holding various supportive signs, they all seemed to cherish the moment of my arrival. The feelings were remarkable and unforgettable, to say the least.
. ..
.
.
.
Gathered together separately, were my wife Tracy and our four children Taylor (12), Aubrey (10), Hannah (8), and Jack (5 1/2). They definitely created, what I hope to have as, the most lasting impression of this journey. After we hugged and kissed, and embraced privately, they escorted me under a sign that read: FINISH LINE - O.M.E.H. BIKE TOUR - September 3rd to October 20th - www. OMEH .org - "I CAN!"
.
.
.
.
. . .
.
Then we walked down to the water, as I carried my bike through the sand, to where everyone had gathered in a gauntlet. In what was perhaps the most surreal moment of the day, I looked out at the breaking waves, turned and faced my crowd of supporters and raised my bike over my head, then simply dipped my front tire in the Pacific Ocean - thus concluding my solo journey from Sea to Shining Sea.
. .
.
.
.
.
.My mission was to raise awareness of the sacrifices made by Ordinary Men and Women in uniform who have laid their lives upon the altar of freedom, thus becoming and forever remaining our Extraordinary Heroes. As I read back through this blog at the comments made from both lifelong friends as well as newly made acquaintances, it is evident that my mission has been accomplished.
.
I will forever be grateful to Dick Hoyt and his son Rick. Together they created a belief in my mind that "I CAN!" That belief alone has been both a comforter and a motivator over the last few months. The reality that "I DID" because I thought "I CAN!" will stay with me for the rest of my life. And now, whether YOU think you can or you cannot...you're right!
.
"I DID."
.
"YOU CAN TOO!"
.
.
.

Many congratulations, Chip!! Wish we could have been at the beach (or at the local Del Taco) yesterday to celebrate the big finish, but it was great to see you today at church! We hope the ride was everything you wanted it to be!!

OK, my turn to post. It's been easy to skip this step as I have been on the phone and in person with you on a daily basis for the last few weeks. Now that this phase has come and gone in your trek I thought it would be good to scribble something down for posterity and all that. :)

This last week has been surreal for me also. Just a week ago you and I were in Cottonwood, AZ starting the first day leg of my "support vehicle" help (ahh, just rewind that clock!). I can't believe all that has since transpired in just this one week. Though Huntington Beach was quite the experience I must say our little "get together" in Blythe on Wednesday night was the capstone for me. I don't know the last time I have ever lost control of my excitement and pride as when I had the chance to speak briefly on your behalf in front of our little band of impassioned Blythe supporters - trust me when I say the community will never forget it.

I realized so much about myself from those few fleeting moments. I realized there is still so much good to be done in my life and that like you, I can effect change in others for the better. Though this concept is nothing novel, it helps when one's feelings/emotions finally climb on board also. This more than anything Chip, is what you have gifted me from your trek. I've never felt like that before and don't know that I'll ever be able to "borrow" that feeling from anyone again in quite that way.

Simply, I want to hold a piece of that moment with me for the rest of my life. I too "can" do anything I put my mind to. Thank you for that reminder.

You are a friend and a model of perseverance that has left a indelible mark with me. For that Chip, I thank you. You have my allegiance forever as a close friend and I love you like a brother.

John "I Can" too. :)

Chip,

Congratulations you did it. To be able to look back on this unbelievable journey and know that you overcame so much must be an amazing feeling. Thank you for providing us with an access point to feel a part of the journey with you. It is no longer I CAN, but I DID and that is outstanding.

Brian

PS Is Tracy ready for you to go the other way yet???

Chip,

CONGRATULATIONS BROTHER.. I tried everything I could to make it there when you arrived, but you know how much commitment the Marine Corps requires of you sometimes.

I am here now, however, in 29P from Monday to Wednesday, then CPEN from Wednesday (with Bach) to Friday - 22 Oct - 26 Oct. I left messages for you to get a hold of me, but I assume you never got them. I hope we can link up, but just in case we can't - I am proud of what you've accomplished and most of all, what your organization "OMEH" stands for..

For those who have fallen and the families who will never be forgotten..

Chip,
I never had any doubt that you would accomplish all that you dreamed of. I'm so grateful that you will be rejoining your family and have given them such an incredible memory of strength and pride to look up to for years to come. I'm grateful for your blog, the inspiration it gave me daily. You are amazing! Of course, that is no doubt because you have an amazing support staff. Go Tracy!

Congratulations Chip! I'm so happy for you and your family. You all have shown such amazing support for each other throughout this journey! I'm sure that the homecoming was spectacular and I can't wait to see the pictures.
Your "I CAN" attitude is truly inspiring!
Good luck with O.M.E.H. and thank you for taking your time to make us all aware of this cause. I know that I will never again see the American Flag without thinking of this journey and the reason you made it.

To All Out There:

I don't want to give anything away but I know everyone is anxiously waiting to hear about Huntington Beach. All I will say is what a great feeling it was to see Chip's flag waving in the distance as he approached us. We all went through many emotions; relief, happiness, pride and yes, even some tears. It was a great day. Stay tuned for Chip's version soon.

Great job, Chip. It was great seeing you come in with your flag blowing in the wind. Very patriotic. What a finish. Im glad that I was able to make it to see you. It has been a long time. It was great to see Tracy and the kids. Congratulations. I look forward to your next journey.

P. S. I hope that my sons shorts helped out Jack.

It was such a great moment to see you reunite with your family. Tracy could hardly contain herself, and I have this fantastic picture of Jack pointing out what he thought was you to her...very sweet. First of all, I am happy that you made it safely home. Second, I am grateful that this gave everyone an excuse to talk about those who serve our country. I hope that you achieved more than just "making" it, I hope this gave you more drive (like you really need it..ha!) and the power to reach the world. I always knew that YOU CAN!...I can too.

Hello Chip and Family,
I'll comment again, now that the pictures are up. Oh my goodness, what a finish!! The pictures are wonderful and of course the ones with you and your family are simply the best of all. Again, I am so glad that you are safely home. Take care, all of you. Lots of love and prayers, Aunt Annie

Chip, Tracy and family,

I want to thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of this amazing adventure. I have to say that sending this last post is very bittersweet. Chips journey and dream has been realized. It does make me reflect on all of those sacrifices that others are making on my behalf. My heart is full of gratitude and love for those that have so much to give and for those who gave all. Chip you have stirred the emotions of so many who might have just continued to live there lives not knowing that "they can". When I think that life is hard or I am having a difficult day (or 48 days), I will think of you and your inspiring message. When you decide to make a book of this journey....let me know...I would love a copy!!!

Love you guys!

So very proud Chip - and I might add - a little scared of your next goal and what it might be because we all know that you are certainly not finished.

Again, so very proud.

Congratultions Chip!
Thank you for posting a wonderful blog. I'll share with you some final words from my best friend and your friend, Lt. Col. Tom Wall..."Keep your spirits up and live life everyday...you have good people counting on you for love, guidance, leadership and inspiration."

Chip, You have inspired and touched many lives. You should be proud.

Happy Birthday, Marine!

I was wondering how you would ever be able to sum up the last day of such an incredible journey. To be honest, I don't think words could justify such an amazing feeling. However, this is a wonderful post and the pictures captured it all. I was so happy to be there and share just a little bit of it with you.

Of course, we all know this ride was only the beginning and there is still so much to be done. I hope to continue to be a part of O.M.E.H. and support it's mission.

Congratulations on completing such and important step in the life of O.M.E.H. and good luck in continuing on!

Congratulations, Chip! JWilliams linked me to your blog and I've been following your trek. You're incredible.

Going back to California myself many times, it didn't surprise me in the least that you stopped at In-n-Out...or celebrated the end at Del Taco. Make sure you hit Wahoo's while you're there. You've earned it, hero!
