DAY 46 - DESTINATION - INDIO, CA

.

.

Miles: 97.6 - Total Miles: 3,016 - Total Ascent: 89,311 ft.

3,000 MILES!!! What an exciting milestone this was. But, one long, boring day. John's dad, Glenn Hermanson, was my support driver today. It sure helped having him with me, especially on the decent down into Indio. I stopped at the top of today's simmit and spent some time at the General Patton museum...fixing ANOTHER flat tire!
.
We were told by C.H.P. that I would not be able to be on the interstate for the decent. But, where there's a will, there's a way. I called Lisa, my Public Affairs Representative, and asked her to get me clearance...and PRESTO! That girl has the right touch. She spoke with Sgt. Elflynn of Indio C.H.P. and I was given the green light. Thanks Lisa (and Sgt. Elflynn too)!
.
.

Once at my hotel, in Indio, Glenn told me that his family wanted to take me out to dinner. And so it was, John's Mom and Dad, his two brothers Adam and Aaron, and Aaron's wife and their two children, took me out for some great Mexican food. I think the reason I like John so much is evident in the rest of his family - just extraordinarily GREAT people! Thank you Hemanson's...for everything!
.
The final stage of this journey has finally arrived. In a previous post, you might recall hearing from one of my best friends in the world, Bernie Perkins, a.k.a. my wing man (see also "MY AMERICAN FLAG" dated Saturday, August 25, 2007). Bernie arrived tonight to be my final support driver and escort me into Riverside. Only two more days in the saddle.

Chip-
I'm thrilled to hear that you're back in Cali. Great work!!
It has been a very long week for me (parent conferences) but I know it's been an even longer 6 weeks (or 7?) for you. Sorry I won't be able to join you at the beach on Saturday, but I'm sure it'll be a good time. What are you going to do with yourself when this is all done and you're back to the routine of normal life??? Amazing experience.
We're proud of you and what you've done with this. I was out with Colby on his tricycle the other day and he asked me if you ride as fast as he does!
Enjoy the rest of your ride, and keep an eye out on the road...you'll soon be reacquainted with what traffic is all about...you lose sight of it after living away a couple years. In fact, this may be the first time in your ride when you're the one passing the cars! Soak up your celebration and good luck getting back to Boise.
And if you get tired of the road rides come out to Colorado and we'll strap you to a mountain bike.
Will talk soon,
Rob

Wow Chip, only 2 more days (and a few more miles) to go!
I know your family is soooo excited to see you. We wish our family could be there to cheer you on.
I know Jacob will be cheering you on from 29 Palms, wishing he could be at the finish line. But like your entire journey, he has been there with you in spirit. Thanks for being a great example to him.
We will be looking forward to hearing about your wonderful journey. It's hard to believe you are almost done, but we knew you could do it! May you have continued safety along the final few miles of your journey. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your wonderful family.

YOU CAN and YOU WILL!!!!

Hi there friend! Because I was able to read your blog this morning I know that you made that long 20 mile (6% grade) decent into Indio. I pictured you flying down that hill...literally! I wondered if you broke your MPH speed record? I took down my 12 page map that you had for me and I only have two more pink highlighted cities. It is so bittersweet. I am so very excited for you and your family...but sad to see the journey and your experiences come to a close. Maybe we will have to think of something else for you to do?!! Enjoy your ride to Riverside.

Chip,

Two more days. That is outstanding, I am really proud to say that you are my friend and that I know someone with the drive and passion for a cause to complete something that seems to me to be so overwhelming. You have made all of us better people through this journey and for that we thank you.

I wish I could be there to see you finish and to hold up a big sign that says Dr. O Did It.

YOU CAN & DID

Brian

Hi Chip, IronMan:

Can't imagine such a big turnout in Blythe. The Hermanson's were good publicity agents. Now you have the ugly part of California to plod, peddle through. Don't get distracted by the Indian gambling Casinos. Although I hear the odds are 100 to 1 that you won't run into bad Santa Ana winds. They are calling for some big ones for this weekend. Hey, maybe they will be at your back pushing you home. They typically blow towards the coast. Hey maybe you could post your route as you pass through Orange County. We should have thousands linning the streets.

Hi Chip! I'm commenting from Jody's house! I keep having to pinch myself to make sure we are really here and really going to see you tomorrow! Words cannot express my feelings as you are ending this journey that you have dreamt of for so very long. I remember clearly you mapping this bike ride 5 years ago. Finally, it came together. I'm so proud of you. Your determination and amazing example is an inspiration to all, especially me and our children. I love you so very much. I can NOT wait till tomorrow.
